BE COYOTE SMART
As coyotes adapt to urban environments and residents tolerate their proximity, coyotes can begin to lose their wariness of humans and seek refuge and easy food sources in our neighbourhoods and near our homes.
When this happens, it is important that the entire community takes action to keep coyotes wild.
There is a simple and safe technique to ensure that coyotes keep their distance from humans and understand that private property is off limits. It’s called Aversion Conditioning or more commonly referred to as “humane hazing”.
Aversion conditioning involves making the coyote feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. It involves using actions or noises
that are unfamiliar to and will startle the animal to discourage its approach.
BE COYOTE S.M.A.R.T.:
To send a clear message that a coyote is not welcome on your property:
S – Stand tall and raise your arms! Stamp your feet.
M – Make noise (shaker cans, clang pot lids together)
A – Assert yourself – Shout in a loud deep voice… “GET, GET OUT OF HERE COYOTE, GO!!” while making short, rapid
advances toward the coyote.
R – Repeat as necessary, until the coyote leaves the area.
T – Teach a neighbour, family and friends. Spread the word!
You can use small stick or stones to throw toward the coyote, but not directly at them.
The coyote may not react immediately if they have become accustomed to humans. In this case you can advance a bit
more toward the coyote and increase the intensity of your hazing.
It is important to continue to haze the coyote until he completely leaves the area!
Hazing coyotes SHOULD ONLY take place in areas where they do not belong:
Your yard, school yard, open park, on your neighbourhood streets and sidewalks
DO NOT haze if you see a coyote at a distance or in an area such as woodlots, hydro corridors, ravines, or if it is near its
pups or den.
DO NOT haze a coyote if it appears injured or sick; email animal.services@vaughan.ca or call 905-832-2281 and ask to
have a call opened for Animal Services to attend.
If you encounter a coyote when out for a walk, keep your children close to you and if your pet is small pick them up while applying the above actions and never turn your back or run from a coyote.
Never corner a coyote while you are hazing; always make sure it has a clear escape route.
Vaughan Animal Services responds directly to calls regarding coyotes 7 days per week, between the hours of 7:00am and 10:00pm. 905-832-2281 animal.services@vaughan.ca
Vaughan Animal Services staff are available for afterhours response to sick or injured animals (both domestic and wild) as well as support for emergency services, by contacting 905-832-2281.
